Nye County
Nye County was established in 1864 and named for James W. Nye, Nevada Territory’s first governor. Its county seat moved from Ione to Belmont and eventually to Tonopah in 1905. Mining booms brought rapid growth to Tonopah and Rhyolite before later declines changed their fortunes. Twentieth-century military testing and later growth around Pahrump added further chapters. These successive centers reflect a county whose extraordinary size has always made its internal geography important.
Tonopah, Pahrump, and the county’s historic mining places occupy very different positions across Nye County. Ash Meadows National Wildlife Refuge provides another distinct destination within the desert landscape. Long travel distances make a focused route more practical than attempting to cover the county in one sweep. Much of the land is federally managed, but that does not mean every area is open to visitors; destination-specific access information matters here.
